Lansing’s company

James B. Lansing founded JBL in Los Angeles in 1946 after leaving Altec Lansing, and died only three years later, but the company he started became the dominant name in American loudspeakers. Through the 1950s and 60s JBL built its reputation on drivers and on statement systems like the Paragon and the Hartsfield, room-sized horn cabinets that now sell for the price of a car when clean examples surface.

The L100 and the studio monitors

In the late 1960s JBL's 4310 compact studio monitor became standard equipment in recording studios, and in 1970 the company dressed the same concept in walnut and a dimpled foam grille and sold it to the public as the L100 Century. It became the best-selling loudspeaker of the decade. The consumer L line grew around it, up through the L166 and the big L300, while the professional 43-series monitors ran from the 4311 up to the studio mains, the 4343 and 4350, which are pursued hard by collectors in Japan especially.

Values today follow originality more than size. Clean L100 pairs with intact Quadrex foam grilles, the orange and blue especially, bring far more than the same speakers with crumbled grilles, because the grilles disintegrate and good originals are nearly extinct. What age does to vintage JBL

Two aging problems dominate. Foam woofer surrounds rot and need replacement on many models, a routine job that a competent shop does without hurting value as long as the original cones stay. And the foam grilles crumble no matter how carefully a pair was kept, which is why original grilles carry such a premium. The alnico-magnet drivers of the era are superb but expensive to repair when abused, so a pair that has been overdriven, with fried voice coils or replacement diaphragms of unknown origin, is worth much less than the same model with original working drivers. Cabinet veneer and badges round out the condition picture.

Buying vintage JBL: what to check

Pull the grilles and read the driver frames; original JBL drivers are clearly marked, and matched original drivers side to side are the single biggest factor in value. Press gently on the woofer surrounds to check for rot, and listen at low volume for rubbing voice coils. Ask directly whether the speakers have been refoamed or reconed and by whom, since good documentation helps resale. Expect to pay a large premium for original Quadrex grilles in good shape and treat that premium as real, because you cannot buy replacements that match. As with all heavy vintage speakers, local pickup beats freight whenever you can manage it.
