Marantz's 22xx receiver line from the early 1970s is the benchmark of the vintage receiver market. No other series combines the same sound quality, build quality, and visual identity. The 22xx hierarchy
Model numbers in the 22xx line roughly correspond to power output. The 2270 is 70 watts per channel, the 2325 is 125 watts, the 2285B is 85 watts. Higher power generally means higher value, but not linearly. The 2270 is the sweet spot: most recognized, best parts availability, excellent performance. The 2325 and 2285B command higher prices but are rarer and more complex to service correctly.
The 2238B and 2252B are mid-tier models that offer the Marantz aesthetic at lower prices than the 2270. Good value for a listener who wants the look without paying flagship money. The smaller models (2216, 2216B, 2226B) trade at more accessible prices and are often the better buy for smaller rooms.
The wood case premium
Marantz sold matching walnut cases (WC-22 for the 2270, other part numbers for other models) as separate accessories. An original WC-22 in clean condition adds $200-500 to a 2270 sale. Reproductions are common. Identify originals by the Marantz badge on the case and consistent wood grain. A damaged original case is worth less than a clean reproduction. Insist on a video demonstration of both channels playing music, the gyro-touch functioning, and all inputs switching cleanly.
