Date your Klipsch speakers from the serial number on the back label · covers 1962–2000

Klipsch encoded the production date into its serial numbers from 1962 through 2000, but the format changed four times. Enter the serial number from the label on the back of your speaker and this tool applies the right rule for its era. It works for Heritage models (Heresy, Cornwall, La Scala, Belle, Klipschorn) and the 1980s–90s lines (Forte, Chorus, Quartet, kg series).

How Klipsch serial numbers work

There are four formats, and the length plus the presence of a letter tells you which one you have.

1962–1983: the letter code

Serials look like 20Y1234 — digits, a single letter, more digits. The letter is the year:

O, Q, V and Z were never used — O and Q look too much like zero. If your serial seems to contain an O, it is almost certainly a zero.

1984–1989: year + week

Eight digits: 89281234 reads as year 89, week 28, unit 1234 — a speaker built in July 1989.

1990–1997: the reversed-year quirk

Nine digits: 135791234 reads as day-of-year 135, then the year's two digits reversed — 79 means 1997. A speaker built May 15, 1997.

1998–2000: year + week again

Back to eight digits with the year first: 00281234 is week 28 of 2000.

Before 1962

The earliest Klipschorns used plain sequential serials: three digits (001 through 021) for 1946–47, then four digits starting at 0121 through 1961. No date is encoded in those; the exact year for a pre-1962 serial exists only in the Klipsch engineering log book.

Two tips from the tag

Stamped serials get misread constantly: an S often reads as an 8 and an O as a zero, so a serial that looks like all digits but will not decode probably has a letter hiding in it. And you can cross-check any date against the drivers: from the mid-70s on, Klipsch drivers carry their own four-digit date stamp, year then week (9429 is week 29 of 1994). Matching driver dates a year or so before the cabinet date is normal; drivers dated far later mean replacements.

Caveats

This tool follows the Klipsch Heritage Series Historical Reference Data (V.4, January 2016), the reference pinned on the official Klipsch community forum. An earlier version of this page used a year table that wrongly included the letter I, which shifted every result from C to H a year early; that has been corrected. Early tags still deviate sometimes, since hand-applied labels, replacement badges and export units can break the pattern. Treat the result as a strong indication, not a certificate: cross-check it against the model's production window, and when the two disagree, trust the physical details of the speaker (drivers, crossover, badge style) over the label.
