Cassette deck prices have doubled in the last five years and show no signs of stopping. Two forces are driving it: the general vintage audio boom, and a specific resurgence in cassette as a listening format among younger buyers who want the physical experience of tape.

Three-head vs two-head
Three-head decks have separate record and playback heads, which allows real-time monitoring of what's being recorded. This is a genuine technical advantage, not marketing. Three-head decks from Nakamichi, Akai, Sony, and Pioneer command significant premiums over two-head equivalents. If a listing doesn't specify, assume two-head.
The Nakamichi premium
Nakamichi decks at every level command premiums over competitors at the same spec point. A Nakamichi CR-7 costs more than a comparable Sony TC-K909, even though both are excellent three-head decks. That's brand premium, not performance premium. They're close in measured performance. Buy Nakamichi if you want the best. Buy Sony or Akai if you want 90% of the performance at 60% of the price.
Belts and pinch rollers
Every cassette deck over 20 years old needs new belts. This is not optional. Old belts stretch, harden, and slip, causing speed instability and wow and flutter. A fresh belt set costs $15 to $30 in parts and an hour of time. A deck sold as "plays great" without mentioning recent belt replacement is probably running on tired belts. Factor in $50 to $100 for a technician to do it properly.
