Binghamton, from 1949

Frank McIntosh founded the company in 1949, and with Gordon Gow developed the Unity Coupled output circuit that gave McIntosh amplifiers their low distortion and their reputation. Manufacturing settled in Binghamton, New York, and it has never left. That continuity is rare in audio and it shapes the market: the company still services old equipment, parts and documentation exist, and the brand has never had a dead period to shake buyer confidence.

Tube era to blue meters

The tube-era products are the historic core. The MC275 amplifier of 1961 and the C22 preamplifier are the famous pair, and originals in clean condition sell for many thousands of dollars, with early production bringing more. The MC30 and MC240 amplifiers and the C8 and C11 preamps are collected nearly as seriously. When McIntosh moved to solid state in the late 1960s it kept output transformers, in the form of autoformers, and introduced the blue watt meters that have defined the front panel ever since. The big solid-state amps of the 1970s, the MC2105, MC2205, and MC2300, remain in demand, along with the matching C26, C28, and C32 preamps and the MR tuners.

McIntosh has reissued several classics over the years, the MC275 more than once. Reissues are excellent equipment and sell well, but originals and reissues are separate markets with separate prices, so know which one a listing is offering. The McIntosh value guide has the details.

Why the resale value is different

McIntosh depreciates less than any other name in audio, and old pieces often appreciate. The factory's continued support is part of it. So is the export market: Japanese and Asian collectors pay strong prices for clean American McIntosh, which puts a floor under the domestic market. And the equipment was overbuilt to begin with, so a sixty-year-old amplifier that has been serviced is a usable component, not a shelf piece.

Buying vintage McIntosh: what to check

The market strength brings problems of its own. Counterfeit and parted-together units exist, especially for the MC275, so verify serial numbers with McIntosh and be suspicious of any high-value piece with a vague history. The glass front panels are backlit and beautiful and they crack; replacing one is possible but not cheap, so inspect the glass and the lettering closely. On tube amps, find out whether the unit runs original transformers, since those are the soul of the piece. Above a few thousand dollars, buy from someone who can demonstrate the unit on a bench or through a dealer, and treat freight shipping as a risk to be engineered around rather than an afterthought.
