SX receivers: the full line ranked

Pioneer's SX series ran from 1969 through the early 1980s. The numbers are power outputs: SX-780 means 45 watts per channel, SX-1250 means 160 watts. Higher wattage generally tracks with higher collector value, but not linearly — the mid-range SX models share the same chassis and build quality as the flagships.

The flagships: SX-1250 and SX-1980

The SX-1250 at 160 watts per channel is the most collected Pioneer receiver. Prices have roughly tripled since 2018 as YouTube coverage brought mainstream attention to the monster receiver era. A clean working example now lists above $3,000; restored units from reputable shops reach $4,500 and beyond.

The SX-1980 at 270 watts per channel sits at the top of the lineup and the market. It's rarer, heavier (around 65 lbs), and harder to ship without damage. The collector ceiling is higher but the buyer pool is smaller. Original MSRP was $1,500 in 1978 — roughly $7,200 in today's dollars. Working examples regularly sell above that adjusted figure, reflecting genuine demand rather than just inflation.

Pioneer's PL-series turntables are direct-drive designs from the same era as the SX receivers. What to check before buying
